Giles Brook Primary School

Admissions

The area designated as the reserved area for our school covers Tattenhoe and Tattenhoe Park. Children are admitted in the academic year in which they are 5. The Admissions Office at Milton Keynes Council deal with all our admissions and the allocations of school places. Registration forms will be available from the school and we will be pleased to answer any queries that you may have. Further information on admissions to Giles Brook Combined School can be obtained from:

Marilyn Barby (Pupil Support Team Leader)

Tel: (01908) 253242

Parents will always be welcome to come in and see the school in operation. A meeting for all new parents will be held each Summer Term, and the children will have an opportunity to spend some time in their new class with their teacher before starting school in September.

The school will follow the Admissions Policy of Milton Keynes Council, a full copy of which is available from the School Office.

In the Summer Term before children start school, a meeting will be held for parents to discuss school routine and the entry arrangements. There is a morning visit for the children in the Summer Term to help them feel secure about starting school and time when they can come in with parents for some afternoon story sessions. Visits will also be made by staff to local pre-schools in the term before children begin school. Our Foundation teachers also endeavour to offer a home visit in the first half of the Autumn Term.

Giles Brook Admission Arrangements for September 2008

From September 2008 we will be making a small change to the way that we admit Foundation Stage children (those children starting school for the first time who will have their 5th Birthday between 1st September 2008 and August 31st 2009) to our school. We would advise that children who have their fifth birthday between 1st September and 31st December attend school full time from September and that younger children who are five between 1st January and 31st August, attend part time until the October half term.

Whilst they are part time, children will need to be collected at 12 noon so that they are clear of the playground before the start of lunchtime play.  If parents have special circumstances / work commitments and need their children to attend full time from September please contact the Headteacher Phil Scull or the Foundation Stage Team Leader Elinor Clare.

Our teaching staff conduct home visits as part of the process of meeting parents, settling children into school and getting to know them.  In the past we have done this over the course of the first half term during the afternoon whilst many of the younger children are still part-time mornings only.  However this means that some families do not receive their home visit until six weeks or more after their child has started school.  Consequently we have decided to have a concentrated programme of home visits during the first five days of the Autumn term with children starting school slightly later.

The following arrangements will apply in September 2008.

For the first five days of term: Wednesday 3rd Thursday 4th Friday 5th Monday 8th Tuesday 9th September, our Foundation Stage teachers will be making home visits.  A list of times will be available to sign up against at our meeting for Foundation Parents to be held at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 24th June 2008 in the school hall.

The children will start on Wednesday 10th September with half the class entering in the morning 9 – 11 a.m. and the other half in the afternoon 1 – 3 p.m.  A list of the class splits for this first day will be sent out with the welcoming letter which we send to all parents who have been successful in their applications for a place during May.  We are doing this split on the first day only, so that we can welcome and settle the children in a small group.

All children then start on the Thursday in both classes with children either staying all day or going home at lunchtime dependent on their age or agreement reached with the school in the case of the younger group.

At the end of the academic year in which they are 11, children from our reserved area will usually transfer to Shenley Brook End Secondary School .
