Giles Brook Primary School
Ofsted Report 2009

Welcome to Giles Brook Primary
Our school opened in 2003 and has rapidly established a very good reputation in the area. I have been a Headteacher of three different schools including two new ones over the last 20 years and as a parent of three children, I have always tried to look at schools through the eyes of a parent. We are a parent and child-friendly school with a terrific team of staff and governors who really do their utmost in the best interests of the children. Relationships are seen as a crucial motivating force in our school; everything we achieve is down to the strong sense of teamwork that permeates our school. Many parents come in to help and we see them as partners and friends with the same common goal as ourselves: trying to bring up polite, confident young human beings with the academic and social skills needed to succeed in later life.
The curriculum is broad with a wide range of exciting opportunities. Basic skills are well taught but we don’t just have a narrow focus on English and Maths. We want our children to have a well-rounded educational experience, to enjoy coming to school and be enthusiastic and motivated. The quality of teaching in our school is very good and we have highly developed monitoring and evaluation procedures to maintain quality.
The school was virtually re-built during the period October 2006 – April 2008 after it was closed due to major building defects after only three years of operation. Despite all the trials and tribulations that we have endured following the building problems, the school has maintained very high standards and remained a central part of the local community. It was a real testament to the supportiveness of our parents that they all stood by us during this highly unsettled period and we have come through it all the stronger.
Our resourcing levels are very good and having a purpose built new building is a huge advantage. We have wonderful ICT capability which is essential in preparing our children for the future and very well equipped classrooms. We have recently purchased flat screen monitors throughout, have interactive whiteboards and visualisers in every classroom and have a child computer ratio of 4:1. Our Friends Association run all kinds of social and fund raising activities which are well supported by our community and due to their efforts we have purchased many additional resources to further improve our facilities: e.g. outside benches for the children, a playhouse for the youngest children, keyboards and 30 guitars. They make a fantastic contribution to our school and have done so much to give our grid square a real sense of community.
We welcome visits from parents during the school day. I always think that you need to see a school in action to get the real flavour of it. We have been oversubscribed since opening and there is a waiting list in almost every year group. I hope you enjoy looking round our website which has been designed and is updated by Jenny Brown our ICT Technician.
Lastly a very big thank you to everyone involved with our school – children, staff, parents, Governors and the local community for the wonderful support and help that you give our school. Our continued success as a school relies on all of us working together as one team for the benefit of the children and the society of tomorrow.
Kind regards
Phil Scull
